Easy on the dirt – hold the salt

I don’t mind winter at all. I guess as long as you’re covered up, it can’t be all that bad. What I do mind is the extreme weather. I do mind that the weather channel says its -15 but then somewhere along the way happen to slip in “but feels like -30 with the wind chill”. I do mind the dirt, the snow and the salt. I also happen to mind the slippery ground, and the loss of traction that causes you to slide in multiple directions and not brake properly.

This afternoon, with the temperature somewhere in the range of -20 to -flatline, I went for a walk with Patti in the blistering cold. Patti was all dressed up (and rockin the Swedish ho hat), and I had khakis, ankle socks, a summer shirt (picture Jay-Z and R Kelly singing Fiesta), a grey hoodie (to cover my lovely bald head) and my usual black leather jacket. I figured my initial silence during our little treck and my finger neatly placed right on top of the speed dial for ambulance services would hint or indicate that I’m cold. But we kept at it while my mind drifted off into the hot savannas of Africa.

    And then we met it.

It’s a cold day in Ottawa and there is snow everywhere. The blistering cold always seems to remind me of a funny story I heard from a relative. He was an electrician in the province of Alberta, and would work on the freight trains as they came by. I don’t recall whether he lived in Edmonton or a different city, but my initial understanding of Alberta is that it is much colder than Ottawa.
